What we do & Who we are

The Urban Room Foundation is a charitable trust dedicated to transforming city life in Aotearoa New Zealand. We believe cities flourish when shaped by all those who live in them. Our goal is to create welcoming, inspiring places—Urban Rooms—where people actively participate in city-making.
Here, ideas flow freely and intelligent responses to big urban issues – from climate resilience to transport choice, quality housing and Māori urban identity – can be debated in a cohesive, productive way.

The Urban Room Foundation exists to:

01

Bring people together to solve critical urban challenges such as housing affordability, sustainable transport, climate resilience, and celebrating Pacific identity.

02

Empower communities by creating inclusive public forums for open dialogue, learning, and collectiveaction in shaping their cities.

03

Raise awareness of urbanism and inspire communities about the possibilities of great city living.

When we honour Te Ao Māori in our cities, something profound happens. Spaces become places with meaning. Development becomes stewardship. Short-term thinking yields to intergenerational vision.

Our Urban Rooms stand on this foundation, where the wisdom of mātauranga Māori guides how we reimagine urban life together.

Whakapapa

telling of the stories of the place in the past, present and future.

Hononga

a space where diverse communities can connect and share their experiences and aspirations for the city.

Puawaitanga

a space where conversations happen to discuss and challenge thinking on city making.

Who we are

We believe in positive urban change. We aim to promote meaningful civic engagement, educate the community on urban issues, and generate innovative ideas for city planning.
