NZIER, with Downer, has undertaken work on the Infrastructure Resilience Index, and what it tells us about the resilience and preparedness of New Zealand’s infrastructure. The Index looks across key infrastructure sectors and regions to identify where resilience is relatively strong, where vulnerabilities remain, and how well the current investment pipeline is aligned with those vulnerabilities. This is the starting point for a broader discussion about Auckland and New Zealand’s infrastructure choices — particularly the balance between building new infrastructure and maintaining what we already have, how we prioritise investment when resources are constrained, and what greater infrastructure preparedness could look like in practice.
